New learning needs to build on prior knowledge. Students come in with very different levels of prior knowledge. To build efficiently on this prior knowledge, students need deliberate practice. It’s essential to do reps in whatever skill you’re requiring with targeted feedback on what parts are working and aren’t. My job as a professor is to provide an environment to promote this deliberate practice for the acquisition of skills necessary to fulfill the learning objectives of a class.
