The job will never love you back

Putting people and the discipline in their proper place can give you the distance to make decisions that are based in community, not competition, because the community gives your your sense of worth, not the company. This is essential, because the company will never love you back. I say that often, and it can sound bleak. I think that’s because I’ve been failing to articulate the second part: But people will.

In Abby Covert’s riveting essay about her career development and departure from Etsy, she says, “I choose me.” I invite us all to push that further and ask yourself where you might say, “I choose us.” Not others at your own expense, but us together, because our success is bound up together.
