Pace layers
An idea originally from Stewart Brand, How Buildings Learn. It’s a favorite with IAs and applies well to digital experiences.

When thinking about pace layers, the combination of fast and slow creates resilience. Fast learns, slow remembers. Fast proposes, slow disposes. Fast is discontinuous, slow is continuous. Fast accrues innovation and occasional revolution to the slow layers. Slow layers control by constraint and constancy, stabilizes. Fast gets all our attention. Slow has all the power. The interplay of these layers is what makes systems durable and dynamic.
